The faces of our organization.
Shena Humbert, LVT
Founder, President
Hi! My name is Shena. I am the founder of Not Another Vet Nurse. I have been in the field since 2006 and an LVT since 2009. I spent most of my career in emergency. With that comes a lot of stress and burnout. In 2017 I left the field to take a break. In 2019 as I was recovering from my final foot surgery, I found myself lost. I was terrified to go back, but there was nothing else I wanted to do. Working with animals truly is a calling. That is when this group was founded.
I am an Air Force spouse to a wonderful man. We met in Las Vegas and have been to Alaska, California and Texas. We don’t have children, but we do have an 8 year old female German Shepherd named Kimber. I am from Euless, TX and was a band nerd in high school. My hobbies include gardening, exercise, photography, baking, crafts, coffee & wine, and am obsessed with true crime.
Kim Marrero, LVT
Vice President
Hi everyone! My name is Kim. I’ve been in Vet Med since 2005. I’ve worked in almost all areas of a veterinary office. I’ve worked as a kennel attendant, receptionist, exam room assistant, VA, VTiT, & LVT. I left vet med for a while due to burn out to become an Animal Control Officer but decided to return to what I love! I love being able to help animals and mentor new veterinary staff members.
NAVN is important to me because starting in the field I experienced a lot of bullying and burn out. I vowed to myself I would never be like veterinary professionals before me who encouraged that type of behavior. That I would be a supportive mentor to the newer nurses trying to enter our field and learn from us. I want to nurture a change in our field, so that we are able to make this profession a long time career CHOICE. Did you know that an average career for veterinary nurses is only 7 years? That our suicide rate is one of the highest? I want to be apart of the change. I want to help create a healthy work life/home life balance. I want to STOP bullying in our profession. I want to help the progression of respect for our profession. I want to help transform the pay in our profession to what it deserves. I want to be apart to the change. I believe that we can do it!
Brittany Rodriguez
Secretary
Hello! My name in Brittany! I’ve been in veterinary medicine since 2011, and a CVA for 5 years. My passions in veterinary medicine are dentistry and palliative care. I started a veterinary medicine sticker business in 2019, after not being able to find cute stuff for our field. My stickers brought Shena and I together and we have since created a bunch of mental health related content to better our field. I’m very proud to be apart of this organization, and am excited to see the all the amazing things that we will accomplish together!
Bonnie Dunphy
Treasurer
Hi my name is Bonnie Dunphy and I’m Shena’s mom. I currently live in England on the beautiful coast of new Brighton by the Liverpool docks. In 2016 I lived with Shena in Alaska during her husbands deployment. During that year I was witness to the stress and pain she went through while working a job she loved and dreamed about her whole life. I watched her struggle daily with the conflict within herself having to chose between her own mental health and giving up the dream she had work so hard to achieve. I am beyond proud of the decisions she has made in her life and her dedication to this project and helping others who go through these same struggles.
